I know it's been forever since I've posted. Here's a super-brief update, and then a quiz result.
1) Jes and I have moved to Tempe. We have a super-cute house, with room for each of us to have a workspace. We have a coat closet, and a yard, (which the dogs love,) and it looks like there'll be enough space for everything once we finish with the unpacking. It's also very very very close to the university...
2) ...which is great, because most of my employment (19.5 hrs/wk) comes from playing piano and percussion for dance classes. I love this job. It's the biggest reason (but not the only reason) why we moved. This semester I have three ballet classes and two modern classes.
3) The rest of my employment is as a pianist at a Unitarian church here in town. It's about 12-14 times as large as the church I worked at in Tucson, and they have a music director, which means I don't have to do that entire side of things all by myself. She can direct the choir and pick the music, and I can play piano. When she was hiring for the job, she said she was looking for somebody who could step up and be more of a co-music director, an equal partner, if needed. I've certainly got that covered.
4) I'm also in the process of trying to get hired as a music teacher at a studio in south Phoenix, and as a tutor in the Tempe/Chandler area. I'm also about to try to get hired as a part-time science editor for an educational firm based out of the bay area.
5) Sorry I haven't been in better touch. If I haven't given you my new phone number or address, leave a comment and I'll get back to you.
And now, a quiz result: ( Read more...Collapse ) |

It's been a busy few weeks -- I went up to Oregon, got to see Jim M. for the first time in a couple years, and got to meet Jes's mom for the first time. I spent Thanksgiving with them. It was awesome beyond description. Jes's mom and I get along really well, and she said that she thinks I'm "a keeper."
Then I get back and I find out that this high school needs me to take over a set of freshman algebra classes for the rest of the semester, so I've been working with that a lot. Pretty labor-intensive... The old guy retired and decided to take all his sick days for the rest of the year. I'm glad he did, because he'd pretty much given up on the kids already. It's a case of some serious educational neglect, as far as I'm concerned.
The dance project I've been working with performs tonight and Saturday night! I'm so excited about it! This number is much much more effective than the other ones were last semester, which really validates our methods in my mind. This time around we've spent a lot more time working on teaching the dancers the structure of the tunes, developing connections between the dancers and the musicians, and making sure we had a good solid foundation before working on a piece. Yeah, we pretty much kick ass. ^_^
Anyway, new quiz, stolen from aerou:
 | You scored as alternative. You're partially respected for being an individual in a conformist world yet others take you as a radical. You have no place in society because you choose not to belong there - you're the luckiest of them all, even if your parents are completely ashamed of you. Just don't take drugs ok?

from the columnist Matt Miller at twopercentsolution.com:
"As an aside, isn't it now clear that a better investment of all those liberal billionaires' millions would have been to buy [Karl] Rove a nice desert island if he'd only have agreed to retire from the game? Wouldn't that have been infinitely more consequential for the campaign than all those 527 ads?"
